By Carl Gavaghan, Local Democracy Reporter

The COVID infection rate has jumped up in the Scarborough Borough after weeks of decline but the number of people that have received a vaccine dose has also increased.

More than 38,000 people have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine in Scarborough, new figures have revealed.

The NHS has released figures showing that in the period up to February 21 38,416 people in the borough were vaccinated.

The data shows that 7,702 people aged 80 and above have been given at least one vaccine dose along with 5,714 people between the ages of 75 and 79, 7,851 in the 70 to 74 age range and finally, the largest category, 17,149 people under the age of 70.

The data include vaccinations administered in hospital hubs, local vaccination service sites such as GP practices and at vaccination centres.

The news comes as Scarborough’s infection rate has jumped up by 12 in the last 24 hours.

The seven day infection rate per 100,000 people in the borough now stands at 64 compared to 52 yesterday.

Craven replaces Scarborough as the district with the lowest rate in North Yorkshire with 53.

The average infection rate in England is now 112 per 100,000 while in North Yorkshire as a whole it is 85.

Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this weekend for anyone with symptoms to get tested.
