Emergency services are on Whitby's New Bridge and main roads around the town are blocked.
Major roads connecting the bridge area into the town centre are gridlocked.
Church Street is blocked and there are long delays from the Industrial Estate on Stainsacre Lane.
Prospect Hill and Mayfield Road which link Whitby to the A169 Pickering Road and to the A171 to Ruswarp are affected.
Roads are now back moving as normal and no casualties have been reported.
