Conservative Party chairman and Filey MP Kevin Hollinrake has again expressed his frustration at the lack of progress.
Congestion and unreliable journey times on a major route to the Yorkshire Coast could be tackled if a renewed push to dual the A64 is successful.
The campaign for improvements has spanned more than a decade. The Hopgrove to Barton section was previously included in the Government’s roads programme, with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson stating in 2020 that the scheme should be funded for construction between 2025 and 2030.
Despite the York and North Yorkshire devolution deal stating that proposals to improve the A64 between Hopgrove Roundabout and Barton Hill would be considered, there is still no clear route to delivering the upgrade.
Last month, four North Yorkshire MPs, including Mr Hollinrake, wrote jointly to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging him to make the long-awaited dualling of the road a priority for his government.
The route serves as a vital economic artery linking York with Malton, Scarborough, Bridlington, and Filey. However, significant stretches remain single carriageway, which campaigners say causes delays, compromises safety, and acts as a barrier to investment, tourism, and economic growth.
In their joint letter to the Prime Minister, the MPs said:
"The establishment of No10 North presents an opportunity to break that deadlock.
Dualling the A64 would improve safety and journey times, strengthen connections between York and our coastal and rural communities and, crucially, unlock investment, productivity and growth across North Yorkshire."
The MPs have requested a meeting with the Prime Minister and his Number 10 North team to discuss taking the project forward.
They added:
"This is an opportunity to demonstrate in a tangible way what your commitment to growth across the North can mean in practice."
Kevin Hollinrake said:
"As long as I am the Member of Parliament here, I'll keep pushing for the dualling of the A64. I'm disappointed that it wasn't brought forward. I understand that the that the economic case for it will always be poor, because at the other end of the A64, we only have sea and fish, not people. And so it looks like the the benefit cost ratio will always be low to medium. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be delivered. And I criticise my own government for not delivering it on time. And we've got somewhere with that, so I'll criticise this government for not delivering it. And I've got to say, I'll also criticise the members of the local members of the Labour Party who have not supported our efforts to push the government in letters and other forms to say we should dual the A64."
He continued to express his desire for clarity from political opponents regarding their stance on the project, adding:
"If they don't believe in it, if they don't believe in dualling for environmental reasons or something, then please tell me. At least the Member of the Liberal Democrats will tell me they don't want to do it for environmental reasons or other reasons. And the Green Party, but don't say you support it and then don't deliver it. And don't say but we're going to support our campaign around it. I was always willing to hold my government to account when it was in government. Always willing to hold my government to account when it was in government if it didn't do the right thing, including on the A64."
North Yorkshire Council has previously backed the dualling of the road and pledged to work cross-party with national and local politicians to secure the upgrade.
York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith has pointed out that both Labour and Conservative governments have previously chosen not to press ahead with the dualling work.
