Free Street Entertainment Returns to Scarborough Town Centre This Weekend

Free magic shows, walkabout comedy acts, and a community parade will entertain residents as the autumn edition of Scarborough Streets arrives this weekend.

Free street entertainment, live magic, and a community parade will transform Scarborough this weekend.

The autumn edition of Scarborough Streets arrives in the town centre, bringing a wide variety of performances and interactive activities. Organisers have designed the festival specifically for local residents, aiming to provide accessible, cost-free entertainment outside of the traditional summer holiday peak.

Professional street entertainers will join forces with local community groups to take over multiple performance areas across the shopping district. The weekend programme promises a diverse mix of attractions, including live music, dance routines, circus skills, and classic Punch and Judy shows.

Interactive walkabout acts will also roam the streets to surprise shoppers. These mobile performances feature comedy cavemen travelling in a miniature cave cart and a spoof Elton John character performing with a moving piano.

Alongside the professional acts, families can participate in hands-on arts and crafts workshops operating throughout the weekend. A key feature of these sessions involves costume-making ahead of a large community parade. The procession will march through the town on Saturday afternoon, travelling down Westborough and Newborough before concluding in Crescent Gardens.

Catherine Goble, one of the event organisers, outlined the extensive line-up of entertainment on offer.

"We've got music, we've got dance, we've got magic. There's circus skills, there's Punch and Judy. We've got walk about acts, so we've got some comedy cavemen in a little cave cart. There's a spoof of Elton John who trundles around with this piano. So that's always really good. And then of course we've got our workshops. So arts and crafts happening all weekend, a costume making for our community parade that's on the Saturday at 3.30 [pm], going down Westborough, Newborough and then sort of back up and ending in Crescent Gardens."

The festival aims to deliver a significant boost to the local economy by increasing footfall for businesses during the quieter autumn months. By extending the season, organisers hope to bring extra shoppers and visitors into the central commercial areas.

Performances and activities will be spread across three main performance areas and several key streets. Visitors will find acts stationed around Aberdeen Walk, Westborough, Bar Street, and Huntriss Row, as well as in the local gardens.

Organisers have intentionally moved away from the perception that local events only cater to holidaymakers, focusing instead on rewarding the community that lives in the town year-round.

Catherine Goble explained how the layout encourages people to discover the free entertainment while supporting the town centre economy.

"It's one of those events that you can just stumble across things happening. It's all free, so you can just come into the town centre and there will be something happening. We've got Aberdeen Walk, round by Waterstones. We've got Westborough outside Poundland and the gardens as well as our three performance areas, and then we've got the walkabout acts who'll be going up and down Westborough, Newborough, Bar Street, Huntriss Row even. We get a lot of people that say that the events that happen here are all for tourists. Ours happen outside the tourist season, so they are aimed at residents, so we've got professional street entertainment acts as well as some of the local community groups. So yeah, it's a great way to extend the season and also for businesses to benefit from the extra people that we hope will come into the town."
