A new pilot scheme is offering free heart health checks in workplaces across Scarborough and Ryedale.
The scheme, which is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, will run until March 2025. It aims to assess the viability of offering health checks in the workplace, targeting individuals who may not typically access them.
Public Health Officer - Andrew Stewart - says it's part of a nationwide pilot project.
Two providers are delivering the checks:
- NYC Occupational Health will focus on North Yorkshire County Council staff across the region.
- An NHS provider will focus on external workplaces, predominantly in Scarborough and some areas of Ryedale.
Delivery commenced in early October 2024 for Occupational Health and early November 2024 for the NHS provider.
Andrew says that the pilot is focusing on routine and manual workers, as they are less likely to attend routine health checks.
The life-saving checks with a professional last 20 minutes and include:
- a discussion about your health, family history of coronary heart disease, how much you drink and smoke
- blood pressure check
- cholesterol and blood sugar finger-prick test
- height and weight measurement
- an assessment to check your risk of developing a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years
- personalised advice to make healthy lifestyle choices
- signposting support to other services
The pilot scheme aims to deliver a maximum of 1,440 checks before the end of March.
