Filey Lions Santa Float Won't Appear This Year

The Filey Lions Santa Tour is the latest to be called off as a result of the COVID situation.

The Filey Lions say the annual Santa Float tour is one of their biggest fundraising events but won't be able to take place this year due to insurance issues related to the COVID situation.

In his November message to the Lions club President John Sellers says..

"As you are aware all of our normal fundraising activities this year have not been able to go ahead. One of our biggest of the year, our travelling Santa float which goes out in December, regretfully has also had to be abandoned for this year, as our insurers have told us that they will not cover the Santa float unless we are in tier 1 and we now have the information that we will be tier 2 from 2nd December.

We have to think about keeping our own members and volunteers safe. It is disappointing for us, as this, one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, has been running for 25 or 26 years and is eagerly awaited by the youngsters in our communities. Hopefully next year we will be back to some normality.

Despite the fact that we have raised no funds this year, we have supported many local groups and organisations with grants and donations, and thankfully we have had funds in the pot to be able to do that. Since April this year we have made grants and donations of almost £5000, as well as almost the full cost of the new kitchen facilities at St. John’s church hall in support of their 2020 vision project. This building accommodates around 25 volunteer and youth groups and through supporting the project, we are supporting all these groups.

Our over 85’s Christmas lunch, in conjunction with Ebor academy, always a popular event, has also had to be put on hold this year. For those disappointed members of our community who look forward to it so much, we will be providing a little Christmas cheer in the form of a gift hamper, delivered by Filey Lions members in the run up to Christmas.

We look forward to hopefully having a vaccine in the spring and getting back to some sort of normality and a better year, for not only us, but for all the voluntary groups and organisations within our district and each and every one of you too."
