Filey Library is seeking new 'IT Buddy' volunteers to help residents with everyday digital skills following a successful six-month support project.
Filey Library is calling for volunteers to join its newly expanded IT support service.
The appeal follows a successful six-month project aimed at expanding digital assistance for residents in the local area.
The library was one of several East Coast locations to benefit from the UK Shared Prosperity Funding.
This financial boost enabled North Yorkshire Council’s library service to purchase new equipment and provide training for staff and volunteers, allowing them to support people in their own homes and within care settings.
During the initial funded period, the dedicated team assisted around forty residents with a variety of digital tasks.
The support provided has covered everything from helping individuals get to grips with previously unused devices, to adjusting crucial accessibility settings such as font size, alongside offering essential guidance on how to stay safe online.
Feedback from those who received assistance has been overwhelmingly positive.
One participant said:
"I feel more confident now."
Another resident shared their delight with the service, stating:
"It made my day — in fact, my week!"
As the project transitions into its next phase, many residents have expressed a keen interest in attending in-library sessions for ongoing digital support.
Filey Library is well-placed to welcome individuals who might find other public spaces difficult to access.
The venue's facilities for visitors include dedicated parking for disabled users, automatic doors, full wheelchair access, a hearing loop, and a disabled toilet that is accessible with a Radar key.
Furthermore, the equipment purchased through the recent funding project includes accessible digital tools specifically designed to support comfort, mobility, and visual needs.
The library now boasts LED desktop magnifying units designed for use with tablets, alongside ergonomic keyboards and wireless pen-mice that offer alternative ways of navigating and interacting with modern devices.
In order to meet this growing demand from the community, Filey Library is now actively seeking new IT Buddy volunteers.
The volunteering opportunity is open to anyone who possesses everyday digital skills alongside a friendly and patient approach.
North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that no expert technological knowledge is required, and full training and ongoing support will be provided to all successful applicants.
Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer is encouraged to email filey.library@northyorks.gov.uk.
Meanwhile, residents who would like to receive IT support can call Filey Library directly on 01609 536608, visit the library in person, or send an email to the same address.
