A veteran football manager with deep family ties to the club will lead Whitby Town into their weekend fixture against Bamber Bridge.
A new era on the pitch will begin for Whitby Town this Saturday as experienced football figure Graeme Lee steps into the role of first-team manager.
The forty-eight-year-old brings more than three decades of professional playing and coaching experience to the Yorkshire Coast club. Succeeding Lee Bullock, the new manager will take charge for the first time when the squad hosts Bamber Bridge this weekend.
The appointment marks a personal homecoming, reconnecting the manager with a club that holds a longstanding personal connection. As a child, time was spent watching Whitby Town while following teams managed by his late father, Tony Lee.
Graeme Lee said the opportunity to take charge at Whitby was one he was keen to embrace:
"It's a club that's been part of my family for many, many years and a club that I've always thought fondly of."
Discipline, organisation, and attention to detail will be central to the new managerial approach, according to the incoming boss.
A lengthy playing career saw the former central defender make more than 470 Football League appearances. Stints on the pitch included time at Hartlepool United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City, Notts County, and Darlington. Promotions were successfully won with Hartlepool, Sheffield Wednesday, and Notts County, while a captaincy at Doncaster led to Football League Trophy success.
Transitioning to the touchline, more than a decade was spent working within Middlesbrough's academy. This extensive coaching background eventually led to the position of lead coach for the club's under-23 side.
A move into senior management followed in 2021 with League Two club Hartlepool United. Under his guidance, the team navigated successful cup runs, reaching the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy and the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Recent managerial roles have included spells at Marske United and Spennymoor Town. Taking over Spennymoor in January 2024, club fortunes were quickly turned around. The squad was moved away from danger and propelled into contention near the top of the National League North. During this successful tenure, two Manager of the Month awards were collected, and the team was led to the FA Trophy final at Wembley.
Whitby chief executive Graeme Hinchliffe described the appointment as a significant move for the club, noting that the new arrival is an experienced manager proven at the current level and above.
A smooth handover is currently underway, with club officials confirming that Denny Ingram will remain temporarily to assist the transition. Having stepped into the manager's role on a caretaker basis during a difficult period, Ingram will leave the club once the handover is complete.
A fresh start is now the primary focus for the club as preparations continue for Saturday's home fixture against Bamber Bridge.
