Emergency Bridge Repairs Mean Road Closure at Goathland

Urgent repairs are being carried out on Barnet House Railway Bridge into Goathland after a vehicle struck the bridge on Tuesday

North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team is undertaking a four-week programme of repair works under a full road closure.

Barnet House Railway Bridge, known locally as Cow Wath Railway Bridge, crosses the North Yorkshire Moors Railway heading into Goathland from Whitby.

There is a diversion route in place via the A169 and Moorgates, although this is only suitable for vehicles under 11ft 3in.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Access, said:

“Work began on site immediately after the incident to make the area safe. We are now repairing the damage to the bridge that took place this week as well as the damage on the opposite side due to a collision earlier in the year.

“Unfortunately, vehicle strikes on our bridges, many of which are listed structures, are becoming more frequent. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, and ask for your cooperation during the works period.”

Pedestrian access will be maintained where it is safe to do so. Operatives working on site will be observing all Government guidelines on safe social distancing.
