North Frodingham Primary School and Beeford Primary School, Driffield, have achieved the Healthy School award by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The award demonstrates the school’s commitment to helping raise healthy, happy children. The Healthy School awards launched across the East Riding in October, following a pilot that was taken up by ten primary schools. It recognises good health and wellbeing practice in schools, from culture to environment to activities taking place.
Schools have the advice and expertise of the council’s public health team to help them implement and deliver the elements of the scheme, including healthy eating options, oral health, physical activity, mindfulness and mental health.
Mel Wilson, Safeguarding Lead at North Frodingham and Beeford Primary Schools said:
“It’s important for our pupils to enjoy taking part in a range of healthy initiatives that we’ve adopted at our schools.
"Pupils benefit from things such as outdoor learning, a range of school clubs including golf, football, archery and dance, meaning they can try different activities. They also have the chance to take part in School Games and options to compete against other schools in events like cross country, dodgeball and tag rugby.
We’re involved in the Tesco farm to fork initiative, educating our pupils on where produce comes from and getting them involved in food preparation and cooking.
“We also run anti-bullying workshops, oral health sessions and Big Talk sessions, and we have staff who are trained ELSAs (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants) to support children with their mental health and wellbeing."
Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said:
“The healthy school award helps improve health and wellbeing amongst children and in turn helps improve school attendance, behaviour, and attainment.
The activities schools are involved in will also importantly instil positive health behaviours in children from a young age, which will help them live healthy, happy lives and prevent future illness and disease.
“Well done to North Frodingham and Beeford primaries on the work they do to give pupils a great start in life!”
Schools that achieve the award will be able to display certificates to highlight their commitment to the health and wellbeing of pupils at their school.
Springhead Primary School was the first school to achieve the award.
