Ninety-five per cent of children in the East Riding have been offered a place at their first-choice primary school for the upcoming academic year.
Parents and carers across the East Riding are today receiving confirmation of the primary or infant school places allocated to their children for September 2026.
The notifications, which are being distributed on Thursday the 16th of April, coincide with the national offer day for primary school admissions. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has confirmed a high success rate for local applicants this year.
According to the local authority, ninety-five per cent of children have been offered a place at their first choice of school. Furthermore, ninety-nine per cent of families have received an offer for one of their top three preferred schools.
The council received a total of 2,855 applications for primary and infant school places. Out of these submissions, 2,713 children were successfully allocated their first preference, while 2,819 secured a place at one of their top three preferred educational settings.
Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education, said:
"I’m pleased to see that 95 percent of families have received their first choice of school for their child."
"Families will receive an email confirming their child’s school place by 4pm on Thursday 16 April. Schools will then begin sending information to families, ready for a smooth transition into school in September."
Despite the high number of first-choice allocations, thirty-five children could not be allocated a place at their preferred named schools. The council stated that thirty-one of these children have been allocated a place at their designated catchment school. The remaining four children have been offered a place at the next nearest school with availability.
Across the East Riding, there is a total of 118 primary and infant schools. This year, twenty-seven of these establishments are oversubscribed, meaning they received a higher number of applications than the total number of places available. Additionally, a further six schools have completely filled all of their available places.
In a separate admissions process, the council also confirmed that all 417 parents and carers who applied for their children to start Year 3 at a junior school have been successfully allocated a place at the school named as their first preference.
