Residents in Whitby are struggling to go about their daily lives due to problem parking, prompting the town's mayor to seek assurances from North Yorkshire Council against future parking meters.
Daily routines for residents in Whitby are becoming increasingly difficult due to severe problem parking across the town.
Concerns over the impact of tourism-related traffic on local people have prompted calls for action, with town officials seeking firm commitments from North Yorkshire Council regarding any future traffic management plans.
While the coastal town continues to welcome visitors, the sheer volume of vehicles is creating significant challenges for those who live and work in the area all year round.
Fears that new parking meters or a reduction in disc spaces could be introduced have led to direct appeals to local representatives.
Whitby's Mayor, Sandra Turner, has asked the council for assurances that local people will be supported and protected from further restrictions:
"It's already extremely difficult in Whitby to live a normal life. We embrace tourism, we have no issue with that, but residents have got to be able to live their lives accordingly. Now, because of the parking situations, it is extremely difficult to go about your regular daily life. My question would be, will this committee, as our re-elected representatives, support the residents of Whitby in working and voting against any proposed introduction of further on-street parking meters and reduced disc spaces."
Despite the concerns raised by the mayor, local authority officials have confirmed that no concrete plans have been put forward for approval.
The current focus remains on studying the scale of the problem and exploring potential solutions, rather than implementing new charges or restrictions.
Any forthcoming proposals would need to balance the demands of visitors with the needs of residents, alongside broader economic and accessibility considerations for the town centre.
Chair of the Scarborough and Whitby Local Area Committee, Councillor Liz Colling, explained that the committee does not currently have any plans placed in front of them to approve or reject, as the process is still firmly in the evidence-gathering stage:
"No decisions have been made regarding the introduction of any parking measures. The work undertaken to date has been focused on gathering evidence, identifying existing parking and traffic issues of which there appear to be many, and considering a range of potential options that may help address those issues. Any future parking proposals would need to be assessed against a range of factors, including residents' needs, town centre vitality, visitor demand, traffic management objectives, accessibility requirements, and the wider economic impacts on Whitby. The Whitby APP is currently a process of identifying issues and potential solutions rather than approving specific measures and there are no proposals at the present time that the area committee has been asked to endorse or reject."
