Empty properties in North Yorkshire are to be subject to the maximum permitted council tax premium.
It's part of a move by the County Council to ensure more homes are available for local people.
Properties that are left unoccupied for two years or more, will have to pay 100 per cent extra council from April, while properties that have been empty for 10 years or more, will have to pay three times the normal rate.
A trail of the scheme in Ryedale has seen a number of empty properties bought back in to use.
County Councillor Yvonne Peacock is pleased to see the scheme expanded to the whole county.
Meanwhile, council tax discounts for unused, unfurnished properties in the Scarborough Borough look set to disappear when the new unitary authority takes over next April.
A plan to unify council tax rates and discounts across north Yorkshire would see the discounts currently available in the Scarborough borough come to an end.
It mainly affects landlords who can use the discount when properties are empty between clients.
