Supermarkets are facing pressure to stop selling disposable barbecues after a severe fire broke out in woodland on the outskirts of Scarborough.

Supermarkets are also facing mounting political pressure to remove the items from their shelves immediately, as fears grow that the North York Moors could once again suffer the severe environmental devastation seen last summer.
Flames rapidly spread through trees, bushes, and undergrowth in Wykeham Forest over the weekend. Emergency services mounted a significant response, with five local fire crews and specialist equipment dispatched to bring the situation under control.
Forestry England officials have directly attributed the latest emergency to a visitor using a disposable barbecue in the area.
The incident comes exactly twelve months after a similar major incident was declared near Whitby. During that event, a single campfire caused a massive blaze on Fylingdales Moor, eventually covering an area of twenty square kilometres.
That catastrophic fire threatened local lives, devastated businesses, and came dangerously close to RAF Fylingdales. The military base serves as a critical piece of national security infrastructure, providing a continuous ballistic missile early warning service to both the United Kingdom and United States governments.
Alison Hume MP is continuing to speak up for residents still living with the consequences of last summer’s wildfire. She recently repeated her call for tighter controls on the use of these devices during a debate in Westminster.

"I’m upset that, after everything our communities went through last summer, a disposable barbecue has sparked a blaze on the North York Moors National Park.
"People watched in horror as flames tore across our landscape, threatening homes, businesses, livelihoods and RAF Fylingdales.
"Firefighters, farmers and others put themselves in harm's way to stop that disaster becoming even worse.
"Yet despite all the warnings and the scars that are still visible today, this continues to happen.
"I’d like to see supermarkets remove immediately disposable BBQs from their shelves.
"One careless decision is all it takes and it’s why I will continue to call for disposable barbecues to be banned in public areas."
