Bridlington Town produced a dominant away performance to secure a 1-0 victory against Stocksbridge Park Steels, thanks to a second-half own goal.
Bridlington Town produced a dominant performance to claim a deserved 1-0 victory away at Stocksbridge Park Steels, with an unfortunate own goal proving the difference at Bracken Moor.
The Seasiders controlled large periods of the contest, creating several promising opportunities and putting their hosts under sustained pressure, particularly after taking the lead early in the second half.
The opening exchanges were relatively quiet, with Bridlington looking to play on the front foot while Stocksbridge adopted a more cautious approach, hoping to exploit spaces on the counter-attack through their pace out wide.
As the first half progressed, Brid began to assert their authority. Eddie Kettlewell was lively down the right, bringing a lofted pass under control before combining with Joe Batty and delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Luca Bolino did well to keep the ball in play at the far post before laying it back to Salam, whose effort narrowly cleared the crossbar.
The visitors continued to threaten and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute. A quick break involving Bolino and Ben Tweed created space for the latter to get a shot away, only for the Stocksbridge goalkeeper to produce an excellent save, tipping the effort over the bar.
Despite Bridlington's growing dominance, the sides went into the interval level, with the Seasiders knowing that a more clinical touch in front of goal could reward their encouraging performance.
Brid picked up where they left off after the restart, immediately pushing forward in search of an opener. Batty drove into space before finding Destiny Nnenanya, who turned and released Alex Markham out wide. The defender's strike from distance flashed narrowly past the post.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute, and it came from a well-worked attacking move following a Bridlington free-kick. Stocksbridge initially cleared their lines, but Batty collected the loose ball around the centre circle and launched it back towards the hosts' penalty area.
Allan provided an excellent flick-on into the path of Kettlewell, who drove forward before firing a dangerous low cross across the face of goal. Under pressure at the near post, a Stocksbridge defender turned the ball into his own net to give the Seasiders a deserved lead.
The goal sparked an even stronger spell from Bridlington, who piled on the pressure and came close to extending their advantage on several occasions. Ahmed Salam combined neatly with Bolino before receiving the return pass and sending an effort just wide of the far post.
However, the visitors were reminded that the contest was not yet won when Stocksbridge threatened to snatch an equaliser. A forward broke through one-on-one with Alex Baird, but the Bridlington goalkeeper spread himself to narrow the angle, and the resulting effort sailed high over the crossbar.
Bridlington continued to manage the game well, making changes as Toby Marriott, Kyle Fanning and Casey Stewart entered the action, before Liam Tibbett and Charlie Birdsall were introduced late on as the Seasiders looked to protect their advantage.
The closing stages demanded concentration and discipline, but Bridlington stood firm to secure a valuable away victory.
While the scoreline remained narrow, the performance offered plenty of encouragement. The Seasiders created the clearer opportunities, enjoyed the better spells of possession and consistently looked the more likely side to find the net.
Stocksbridge had their moments, including a significant opportunity to level, but Bridlington's overall control and attacking intent made the three points a deserved reward for a strong display on the road.
