Victims of domestic violence and abuse across the East Riding will be encouraged to seek support through new awareness messages installed on refuse collection vehicles.
Vital support messages for victims of domestic violence and abuse will now reach every corner of the East Riding on the sides of refuse collection vehicles.
Five bin lorries have been fitted with prominent new advertising panels designed to encourage those suffering to come forward and access much-needed help.
The travelling advertisements will ensure that crucial information reaches the entirety of the region. Officials expect this to be particularly effective in rural areas, where victims might find themselves more isolated from traditional support networks and less likely to encounter stationary public health campaigns.
Awareness of domestic abuse, alongside the various avenues of support available, will be heavily promoted through the mobile campaign. The initiative aims to highlight that assistance is available for a wide range of people affected by these issues. This includes dedicated support for adults and children who experience domestic abuse, as well as specific programmes for individuals who are actively wanting to change their own abusive behaviours.
The advertising push forms a key part of the local support for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, which takes place throughout October. This year’s campaign operates under the theme of 'Spot the signs, start the conversation'. The focus is firmly on the vital role that everyone in the community can play in recognising the signs of abuse and helping those who are affected by it.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, Councillor Lyn Healing, said:
"It’s vital that we raise awareness of domestic abuse across our region through all available resources, including our bin lorries.
Nobody should suffer alone and the council’s DVAP website provides information and support. In urgent matters, where there is a belief of immediate danger, always call the police on 999."
People looking for help can make professional referrals, or self-referrals if they are calling about their own situation. This can be done by telephoning 01482 396368 or by completing the online self-referral form provided by the Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership.
The dedicated partnership team works closely with housing services to assist anyone who has been placed in temporary accommodation as a result of domestic abuse. They also provide crucial emotional support to individuals who have been dispersed from their homes due to unsafe living conditions.
Immediate support in an emergency remains the top priority. Anyone who is concerned for their own immediate safety, or the safety of someone else, is urged to always ring the police on 999. For non-emergency situations, the public can contact the police by dialling 101.
A wealth of safety information is available on the local authority's domestic violence web pages at www.eastriding.gov.uk/living/crime-and-community-safety/domestic-violence/domestic-violence-adult-services/. Additionally, emotional support and information can be accessed around the clock by contacting the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, which is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, on 0808 2000 247.
