Scarborough Uniform Recycle at Westborough Methodist Church on Sunday will give people a chance to pick up free school uniform.
Since 2021, Scarborough Uniform Recycle has been collecting and giving away free school uniforms. Nearly 2000 children have received uniform from them in that time and say they're looking forward to continuing this work, with the aim of helping families during challenging financial times as well as helping the environment and diverting clothing from landfill.
One of the organisers, Tom Clayton, says cost of living is a big factor for many families on the Yorkshire Coast:
"It is yeah. In the last few years that we've been doing this, the cost of living thing has become a big part of what we do. The whole process has two things behind it. One, that we're trying to save people a bit of money in, the cost of living and things, but also an environmental thing, trying to stop this clothing going into landfill as well.
"People have just continually been very generous, so we take donations in through the year really. We've got our blue bin in Sainsbury's and I'm often emptying that quite regularly, so we often get the donations in and schools are picked up on it, so we get lost property and things like that as well.
"So yeah, the donations have been pretty consistent really."
The giveaway event is on from 4pm - 6pm at Westborough Methodist Church (opposite the train station). As always, all items are completely free and everyone is welcome.
Tom says all sorts of people come to the giveaways:
" There's a mixture of people come along because the giveaway events are open to everybody and there's no questions about money or earnings or anything like that. Everybody's welcome. I think, for some people, it's a case of, [they] could really do with a bit of spare uniform for other people.
"We get referrals from social services or some of the refugee services that go on. We try to help people from across a very wide spectrum, who are supported through it."
