Backing for Scarborough Athletic Fan Zone Plan

Scarborough Athletic could get it's own fan zone at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

The Borough Council's Babinet have backed the idea and the club are in the process of trying to secure £50k from the Premier League Club Development fund.

The funding would allow the club to relocate its Victory Bar, shop and storage, and add a new office unit with ticket sales facilities.

Councillor Jim Grieve is backing the development.

The fan zone would give the football club a permanent base at the ground.

Scarborough Borough Council's Head of Community Services - Jo Ireland - says it would bring a number of benefits.

Scarborough Sports Village opened to the public in June 2017 and has been the home of Scarborough Athletic FC and Scarborough Ladies FC since opening. The facility also provides significant community use and plays host to local grassroots clubs, football development initiatives, local league match play, community groups and educational use.

For SAFC one of their key priorities is to enhance the fan experience on match days. The council says that discussions have taken place over a number of months between the Club, Council officers and Everyone Active to develop proposals to create a designated fan zone which would provide a designated area for supporters to meet and socialise on match days.

The development would include:

  • Additional safe storage for goal posts and other equipment
  • Creation of a fan zone for SAFC commercial/community activities at pitch level (currently shop, office, ticket sales and hospitality all take place in the bar which is too small to cope with all activity on match days)
  • Provision of catering/bar at pitch level (independently operated) – which would enable the current temporary bar located on the multi-use games area to be returned to sporting use.
  • SAFC office/admin space and a match day community hub.

SAFC have applied to the Premier League Club Development fund which provides off the pitch grants of up to £50,000 to help create new, or to
modernise existing facilities within their stadium. If successful it's expected that funding would be awarded for delivery in Summer 2023

The funding would allow the club to relocate its Victory Bar, shop and storage, adding a new office unit with ticket sales facilities and utilities. This would provide more flexibility for SAFC to operate with a degree of independence and would reduce operational difficulties arising with balancing the needs of a range of users of the SSV facilities in the limited space available. The cost of the Fan Zone will be covered by the club in its entirety.

Proposed upgrades to the fencing at the stadium would be paid for out of the stadium naming rights deal. The naming rights for the stadium were procured and awarded to Flamingo Land in June 2017 under a five year agreement which ended in June 2022. The Borough Council says  a further procurement exercise is currently ongoing.
