A Level Results Day on the Yorkshire Coast

It's a huge day for students on the Yorkshire Coast with A-Level, T-Level and BTEC results being revealed.

Thousands of young people on the Yorkshire Coast will be dashing down to their school or college to find out how they got on in their A-levels.

This is the first time since 2019 that pupils have sat A-Level exams due to the pandemic, where A-Levels were teacher assessed from mock exams, coursework and essays.

The Key Stage 5 league tables will be published by the Department for Education in January 2024. This will include attainment and progress measures for A-levels and for other level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTECs and diplomas.

Scarborough Sixth Form College say they've achieved an excellent set of A Level, T level and BTEC results.

This summer’s cohort of students were the last to have their GCSE exams cancelled so this was the first time they had experienced the pressure of revising for and sitting many exams in a short space of time. Despite this and the disruption in recent years due to the pandemic, they have performed very well, with some notable individual successes. The overall pass rate for A levels was 98% with 45% achieving the highest grades of A*, A or B. 15 students achieved straight A*/A grades with the best performance seeing one student achieve 4 A* grades and a place at Cambridge University.

Principal Phil Rumsey said:

“These are fantastic results for our students that will allow them to progress to the University of their Choice or to begin apprenticeships or employment and enjoy successful careers. For some of our students who joined us with below-average GCSEs, these achievements today will be life-changing.

"They are thoroughly well deserved and just reward for all the hard work, ambition and determination shown by our students. In particular, I would like to give a special mention to all of our staff who have worked really hard, with great focus and energy to enable and support our students to do their best.”

“Our purpose at the college is to enable students to set their sights high and realise their ambitions. We have students with a wide range of talents and abilities whose needs we are here to meet as part of the local community. Students achieving such good qualifications and progressing to higher-level destinations is clearly a big part of that and we continually strive to achieve even more for them.”

North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director for children and young people’s services, Stuart Carlton, praised students in the area for their exam success.

He said:

“I would like to congratulate students on their achievements and thank our dedicated teachers for all the help and guidance they have provided. I wish young people who have received their results today the very best in their future studies or employment.

“I am very proud of the schools and colleges in North Yorkshire, and of the commitment of leaders and teachers, who work incredibly hard to support our students to achieve well. As a local authority we are ambitious for all our children and young people and are committed to providing here in North Yorkshire the quality of provision and support they need to pursue their individual aspirations.”

East Riding Council say early result indications suggest that students in the area have performed well compared to regional and national averages.

Councillor Victoria Aitken, portfolio holder for children, families and education said:

“Good luck to all students receiving their results today!

“The young people collecting their results have had a turbulent few years in education, and haven’t sat exams since the SATs in Year 6, due to GCSEs not taking place during the covid pandemic. I know they will have worked very hard and I hope our students achieve the grades they hope for and need for the next steps in their journeys.

“Thank you to the dedication and hard work of our wonderful teachers for the exceptional support they give to our students and the whole school community.

“I wish our young people lots of success in their futures, either in further education, training or into their chosen career.”

Lady Lumley’s Year 13 students have collected their A Level and Level 3 BTEC results.

They say the day is about recognising the individual and collective challenge that the 2023 students have faced and celebrating their efforts, application and performance to come through so well.

A school spokesperson added:

'Thank you to all the parents/carers who have supported their children through 13 years of education, to all Lady Lumley’s staff who have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them and caring for them – we are all so proud of their achievements.'

Saul Bateman achieved A*A*A*A and will study Physics at Manchester. Felicity Lloyd achieved A*A*AA and will read Mathematics at Bristol University. Lucy Hinchcliffe achieved A*A*A and will study Chemistry at Liverpool. Isabelle Wilson achieved A*AA and will read Law at Newcastle. Freya Botzen achieved three A’s and will study Biological Sciences at Durham.

Molly Harland will read Physics with Astrophysics at Hull University following her excellent A*AB results. Sam Lowe will go on and study Business Management at Liverpool University having achieved ABB. Alexandra Tubbs will be undertaking a Veterinary Nursing course after achieving ABB. Gianluca Mastrolonardo is going to Birmingham to study Geography and Urban & Regional Planning following two B’s and a Distinction*. Sarah-Jane Skaife gained 3 grade C and is looking forward to a GAP year. Leo Wilbor gained CCC and is pursuing a Dental Nursing Apprenticeship.

Clair Foden, Headteacher, said:

‘Lady Lumley’s Year 13 of 2023 deserve our recognition and congratulations. As a year group, they have had a unique experience of education with disruption due to Covid all through Key Stage 4, cancelled GCSE and ongoing peaks of Covid disrupting teaching and learning. There is significant press coverage this year in the depression of A Level grades nationally and the challenges of securing University places. Against this backdrop all our students have succeeded in progressing through two years of advanced study to sit their A Level and Level 3 BTEC exams. They have developed skills and qualities, got stuck into the Duke of Edinburgh awards and formed friendships that will last as well as earning fantastic results. Well done Year 13! What an exciting prospect their future is!’

Fiona Allan, Sixth Form Student Support Manager was delighted, she said:

“We have seen each student grow as an individual and they should be proud of both their academic achievements and also the young adults that they have become.”

Alex Carter, Assistant Headteacher, Head of Sixth Form added:

"The 2023 Year 13 students at Lady Lumley's can be immensely proud of what have they achieved. Their dedication to their studies and performance when it mattered most have enabled them to shine and reach destinations that will propel them forwards in their careers. I would like to say on behalf of the school and wider community, congratulations! We are all proud of you.”
