North Yorkshire Council has approved a £2 million construction contract to begin work on the £6.68 million Scarborough Station Gateway project in January 2027.
Construction work on the £6.68 million transformation of Scarborough railway station’s forecourt has moved a step closer after North Yorkshire Council approved a £2 million contract for the scheme.
The authority has agreed to directly award construction works worth £2,017,765 to its wholly-owned company, NY Highways Ltd, paving the way for work on the long-awaited Station Gateway project to begin in January 2027.
The public realm improvements form a key part of the wider £6.68m regeneration scheme, which was granted planning permission earlier this year and is intended to create a more welcoming gateway to the seaside town.
The council said the contract had been awarded through the authority’s existing highways framework arrangement, with construction expected to start in January and be completed by January 2028.
Plans include a redesigned forecourt, improved pedestrian routes, enhanced public spaces, new seating areas, resurfaced footpaths and tree planting aimed at creating a more attractive entrance for residents and visitors arriving in the town.

Improvements to taxi facilities and disabled parking are also included within the wider proposals.
North Yorkshire Council has previously described the redevelopment as a potential catalyst for further regeneration and investment in Scarborough, helping to strengthen the station’s role as a transport hub while supporting wider plans for economic growth.
Cllr Mark Crane, the authority’s deputy leader and executive member for open to business, previously said:
“This is a major milestone for a project that has been many years in the making.
“Securing planning approval means we can now move forward with significant improvements to one of Scarborough’s busiest gateways, creating a more attractive and welcoming entrance to the town for residents and visitors.
“The scheme complements other regeneration work taking place in Scarborough, including plans to revitalise West Pier, and we hope it can act as a catalyst for further investment and improvements in the years to come.”
