The Borough Council's latest data shows nearly two and quarter million visits to Scarborough's Town Centre this year.
Visitor numbers at some of Scarborough Borough Council's leisure facilities are up and footfall in Scarborough town centre appears to have increased this year despite some recent dips.
Footfall in Scarborough’s town centre has fallen for three consecutive months leading up to November 2022 but overall is up 9.5% compared to the same time last year with most of the gains made between January and May. Footfall since June has been down on last year.
According to national industry analysis, footfall has been impacted by the cost of living crisis and train strikes but will likely increase in December due to Boxing Day sales.

A report presented to the authority’s cabinet on December 13 estimated that in the second financial quarter – leading up to the end of the calendar year – around 2.2m visits took place “to date in 2022/23”.
Councillor Janet Jefferson says the latest data shows some good growth for leisure facilities.
The latest data shows that over 75,000 people have used Scarborough Sports Village and Filey's Evron Centre has seen over 36,000 users.
The councils quarterly performance report shows the following areas as performing well
- Total number of users at the Evron Centre – over 36,000 users
- Total number of visits (excluding spectators) at Scarborough Sports Village – over 75,000 visits
- Total number of bookings at the Peasholm Community Centre – with 27 bookings achieved
- Estimated visits (measured by pedestrian footfall) to Scarborough town centre – with over 2,249,000 visits to date in in 2022/23
- Percent of market hall stalls and vaults let with 88.4% of units currently let
- Percent of Filey Brigg Caravan Park pitches that are occupied with occupancy levels of over 80%
- Filey Brigg bookings – over 3,000 bookings achieved
Providing an update on Scarborough Borough Council's overall performance, Councillor Jefferson says that services are continuing to performing well despite additional pressures arising from Local Government Reorganisation and staffing issues in a number of key services.
According to the report, the “best performing” indicators include the “per cent of benefits claims processed accurately” which stands at 99.6 per cent.
Other “successful” indicators include the number of recorded anti-social behaviour incidents which stands at 4,906, compared to a “target” or estimate of 9,156.
Featured among the “worst performing” indicators is the portion of “broadly compliant licensed premises”.
According to the council’s data, only 58 per cent of licensed premises in the borough are “broadly compliant” whereas the target is 80 per cent.
However, this is an improvement from 12 months ago when the same figure stood at only 50 per cent compared to a target of 80 per cent.
