£1.5 Million Water Pipe Upgrade Begins In Snainton And Ebberston

A £1.5 million project to replace aging water mains in Snainton and Ebberston is underway to significantly reduce sudden leaks and supply interruptions.

It's promised that water supplies in Snainton and Ebberston will become more reliable as a £1.5 million pipe replacement scheme gets underway.

Bursts, leaks, and frustrating supply interruptions will be significantly reduced once the new infrastructure is completed in spring 2027. Ageing pipes across the two villages are being swapped for 3.7 kilometres of flexible and highly durable plastic piping.

The extensive upgrade works have already started on Barker’s Lane in Snainton. Construction teams will gradually work their way towards Lairs Lane, with further pipework scheduled for replacement along Middle Lane, High Street, and Lairs Crescent.

Physical works are being carried out by contract partners from United Infrastructure on behalf of Yorkshire Water. Local residents have been formally informed about potential disruptions during the construction phases.

Nichola Fairbairn, a project manager at Yorkshire Water, said:

"The project in Snainton follows several other mains replacements across North Yorkshire, with work finished in Grassington, Bedale, and Settle, to name a few. We’ll be working quickly and doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work."

The village upgrades form part of a much larger £406 million regional programme planned between 2025 and 2030. Priority is being given to areas with older networks that are historically prone to sudden bursts and drops in water pressure.

Almost 300 kilometres of pipework has already been replaced since the broader initiative began. This represents nearly a third of the overall goal to lay 1,000 kilometres of fresh water mains across the region.

Overall infrastructure, customer experience, and environmental impacts are being targeted through a massive £8.3 billion investment programme by the utility company.

Coastal water quality is also in line for major improvements nearby in Scarborough. A multi-million-pound transformation of the town's wastewater network is currently being investigated and planned to further protect the local environment.
