An Environmental and Arts Festival

More Information (This is the Coast is not responsible for external websites)

Big Ideas By The Sea Festival based in Scarborough will be offering a range of events and talks over a two week period that will focus on important environmental themes.
Kane Cunningham co-director of the festival said, “This is our third event and growing yearly. We are working closely with key partners and speakers to ensure we offer a range of talks and activities that explores the wonder of the natural world but also some of the issues the global environment is facing. We are pleased to be showing work by photographer Peter Caton of floods in the South Sudan at St Mary’s Church but also work by photographer Martin Parr at Princess Cafe of sunbathers on Scarborough beach, both a real coup for the festival.”
The festival aims to be the North’s leading Environmental and Arts festival over the next 5 years showing work from international artists but also the work of regional artists who explore global themes.
John Oxley MBE co-director said, “The natural and man-made environment is at the heart of the festival. We will be offering a range of events and talks that will bring world
leading thinkers and speakers to Scarborough. These include Professor Sean Paling to discuss Dark Matter and Dr Steve Buckley, a world-expert on mummification.
We will also explore Scarborough’s history through the ‘Big Dig’, an archaeological excavation near St Mary’s Church in Paradise overlooking the harbour and the South Bay. We will be working with Heritage Adventures Ltd and Scarborough’s Archaeological and Historical Society over two weeks and offering a chance for the public to get involved in the Big Dig. Full details of how to book for the Big Dig and all our other events can be found on the Big Ideas By The Sea website.”
