Newly opened 758-metre bridge in China collapses

A newly opened bridge has partially collapsed in China.

In footage, part of the bridge, in China's southwestern province of Sichuan, crashes into the ground as a huge cloud of smoke rises up next to a mountain.

There were no reports of any casualties.

Police in the city of Maerkang had closed the 758-metre-long Hongqi bridge to traffic on Monday afternoon after cracks appeared on nearby shops and roads.

Shifts were also seen in the terrain of a mountain, local government said.

Conditions on the mountainside then worsened on Tuesday afternoon, with continuous heavy rainfall triggering landslides and causing the collapse of the approach bridge and roadbed.

Construction of the bridge finished earlier this year, according to the contractor Sichuan Road & Bridge Group on social media.

The bridge is located on a highway linking the country's heartland with Tibet.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched.

According to Chinese media, there was one truck on the bridge at the time of the collapse. The driver was successfully rescued.
